BUSINESS SUCCESS STORIES
ArtBoxx Salon & Co
Nikki Luft approached the Western Dairyland Women's Business Center with one question in mind: "Is this possible?" Luft knew she had the passion, skills and an innovative approach to the salon environment in the Chippewa Valley --suite style salons that would make her successful-- she just didn't know if it would be a good fit for the area, or if the financial freedom of owning her own business could become a reality.
Luft, who at the time was acting as a travelling brand ambassador for a popular hair color line, found herself missing the spot behind the chair. She took the step and approached Western Dairyland through one-on-one consulting with a Business Development Specialist to make this dream into a reality. "I was very surprised that everyone seems to have an opinion about starting a small business, but not the expertise I needed. My Business Development Specialist really helped with substantial information that I could use toward building my business," Luft said.
The Western Dairyland staff assisted Luft with her main concerns of seeing the possibilities of financial success by establishing financial projections and keeping her motivated to see the project through to the end. "The fact that it only took six months from conception to startup at our current location would not have happened without the assistance of Western Dairyland," she said.
Luft noted that it was the motivation of her Business Development Specialist to keep her on track and moving forward is what made all the difference. She also appreciated all the referrals provided that opened up new avenues for getting the word out through public relations, press releases and making contacts with networking organizations (such as DECI and Women of the Valley).
"It's amazing at how many people have heard about ArtBoxx Salon & Co. and we haven't even really been trying to advertise yet. People are talking about us or stopping by, and turning into new clients every day," Luft said.
Luft was quick to point out that it was the publicity garnered through the advice of allowing Western Dairyland to write a press release about ArtBoxx Salon & Co.'s opening, and being located downtown, has proven a very effective way to brand ArtBoxx through natural connections with other business owners and interested individuals.
In fact, ArtBoxx Salon & Co was featured in a Leader Telegram Article on August 3, 2014 (two months after opening), SummerFest television news coverage, Jump Start Eau Claire Recognition, and is currently working on a project with a local documentarian who is competing in a film competition through AT&T's bizcircle.att.com. The documentary aspect is going to highlight how ArtBoxx Salon & Co. is a creative solution to the established industry trends through technology, creativity and innovation.
"Stylists deserve to earn as much as they can, and by renting their own suite, they can integrate their creativity and skills into a sustainable career," Luft said, "That's my personal value and it holds true with opening ArtBoxx."
