BUSINESS SUCCESS STORIES

Atelier Designs by Lucianne

Upon retirement, Lucianne Boardman sought out to try something she liked and was good at. With a passion for calligraphy and design, Boardman worked and taught in the Eau Claire School District. She taught many students how to write calligraphy and incorporated the writing style into work there, but it wasn't until her niece's wedding that Boardman got the idea for a design store. For the wedding, Boardman created a calligraphy writing chalk board decoration. Boardman hit up thrifts shops and sales, gathering as many vintage and decorative pieces as possible. Carefully crafted and executed, she knew she could make these and sell them for a profit.

Not sure where to turn next, Boardman came to Western Dairyland for assistance in starting up her own design store. She heard about Western Dairyland through the Women's Business Conference that occurs every April and after attending, quickly signed up for business counseling appointments at the Western Dairyland Business Center. Mostly working with Ken Pearson every couple of weeks, Boardman was able to get help on writing her business plan and her design business dream was coming closer to a reality.

In 2015, Boardman opened Atelier Designs in the Banbury building. However, she found that she wanted more space and to work closer to home, so she moved her design chalkboards to a cottage in Chippewa Falls.  Classes at Atelier Designs consist of calligraphy, knitting, weaving and multicultural arts. Four other artists that teach classes alongside Boardman. "With all the classes offered, I've seen every age enjoying them-- even adults! I have had full classes a majority of the time," she said. Boardman has created a place where people from Eau Claire, Chippewa, Menominee and Bloomer can go for all their chalkboard and rustic sign needs, available for any special occasion: Weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, family reunions, births and graduations. Vintage accessories and antiques can also be rented to enhance the memorable event.
