BUSINESS SUCCESS STORIES

Earthbound Organic Recycling

Jamie Pappas and her husband both knew that at some point in their futures they would like to create jobs for community members of all abilities. Their passion for the environment evolved over the years as well, and that is what led them to start Earthbound. Earthbound is a local choice for organics recycling that offers hauling services to meet waste management needs. The company was started in 2014 based on passion to preserve the Earth and the community of Eau Claire.

Both Pappas and her husband have degrees in vocational rehabilitation and members of her husband's family, for most of his life, were small business owners. However, it took Pappas roughly four years after the business started to make the business fully operational.  After a one year trial phase, she came to Western Dairyland for assistance with business plan writing and identifying funding sources that she would be eligible to use, based on being a woman-owned business. Pappas said she chose Western Dairyland because she was aware of our role in assisting small business startups.

Once contacting Western Dairyland, Pappas participated in an introductory course about small business development training. Throughout the course, she met with a Western Dairyland business counselor, and as a result, successfully developed her business plan and identified the funding source that allowed her program to become operational.

Earthbound has had multiple impacts on the community. "Community members have overwhelmingly supported the idea of curbside composting, which provides a clear indication of where our waste management services should be headed," Pappas said. As a new business, Earthbound is still gaining traction, but she feels this will not only be a successful venture, but a success for our entire community in terms of reshaping our waste management techniques.
