BUSINESS SUCCESS STORIES

Jeanne Kay Styczinski, author of Mama, How Does the Wind Start to Blow?, approached Western Dairyland Women's Business Center for assistance with turning her children's book into a post-retirement career as the president of her own publishing business.

Styczinski attended the "Launch a Small Business" class at the Women's Business Center, where she learned the steps to make her business dream into a reality. Afterwards, she made an appointment to meet with a Business Development Specialist for one-on-one business counseling. "It was a little intimidating walking into the first meeting," Styczinski said. "However, my Business Development Specialist stayed so positive without overwhelming me."

"The class was great, but talking it through is even more helpful. Being able to share my dream and what needs to happen coupled with a non-biased person who can listen, give solid advice, look at my product and give guiding steps along the way really helped," Styczinski said.

The Business Development Specialist was able to walk Styczinski through the process of establishing a business to market and sell her books, versus just writing and illustrating them. Together, they calculated financial projections her business based on a pricing strategy that could fit within the desired market while maintaining a healthy profit. The financial projections gave Styczinski the tools necessary to make prudent business decisions regarding the most cost-effective number of books to print. Other business issues addressed included applying for an FEIN, product shipping and creating a recordkeeping system to track inventory, sales and taxes.

"It's better than I ever expected," Styczinski said. "I didn't anticipate all the incoming calls from people I had never met or briefly met for requests to speak at presentations, reading events and assemblies. My success is attributed to the reminders to go slow and to take one step at a time. This helped me stay on task without becoming overwhelmed with starting a new business. And after six months, I sold out of my first run of printed books! Now I'm looking at replicating my local success and branching out over a bigger market!" Styczinski said.
