Business Center News

the bluebird salon and boutique

Brandi Berg always knew she had an entrepreneurial side, fostered from years of watching her father perform duties as the owner of a bar and logging company in Arkansaw, Wisconsin. On the other side of the family, her mother and stepfather owned and operated a trucking company in Hixton. Berg found that she enjoyed observing the managerial side of things. After attending beauty school, she moved to Tempe, Arizona, where she worked at Sport Clips. "I took my team from number ten in the state to number four. That feeling of growing other stylists is addicting," Berg said.

Berg, determined to establish her own presence in the realm of business ownership, opened up the bluebird salon and boutique in Whitehall. "I always loved the connection between body, mind, and soul, and I really feel that when you look good, you feel good, and in return you do good in the world around you," she said.

Despite Berg’s background in business, she knew she needed some help getting things off the ground, and turned to Western Dairyland to do so. “Western Dairyland was great in assisting with my business plan … [they] gave me the confidence to make the decision not to take a business loan if I didn’t have to, and to work on getting what I needed as I went,” Berg said.

At the bluebird, Berg strives to promote beauty and wellness that can be achieved while reducing environmental impact. "Our products, environment and attention to full service are dedicated to creating a space where clients and stylists do not have to compromise their health," she said. Customers can expect organic products and treatments, something that Berg calls a 'big city luxury in a small town.' "I'm the only one within 35 miles that hits this niche market. People care about the products they use and shouldn’t have to compromise because of their location,” Berg said. Products offered by the bluebird are free of ammonia and available without Paraphenylenediamine (PPD), a chemical commonly used in hair dye that can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions.

But the bluebird’s success has not been without sacrifice. The biggest obstacle, according to Berg? “Time,” she said. “Balancing being a mom of two littles [with] book work and customer service can be quite the juggling act.” Berg had planned to do bookwork during downtime at the salon, but her clientele has increased so much that she now does it at home, after her children go to bed. She knows this won’t hold her back, though; in terms of the bluebird’s future, she hopes her team and guest count will continue to grow.  “I want to make an impact on our community and promote a healthy self image for young entrepreneurs, and establish that a strong work ethic gets you where you want to be,” Berg said. “It won’t be easy, especially with a young family, but I’m up for the challenge!”
