Are your entrepreneurial efforts on summer vacation?

Are your entrepreneurial efforts on summer vacation? Whether summer is your business's down time or peak season, know that nearly all businesses experience some degree of seasonality. The key for continuous growth is to recognize your specific business's cycle and plan ahead -- not just by gearing up for the busy times but by effectively capitalizing on those not-so-busy times. Here are five ideas to make the most of your summer vacation:

  1. Research & Development - It is easier to think creatively and out of the box when you are not burdened by deadlines and time constraints. This is the time to pour energy into developing that new product or service idea that's been rattling around your brain.
  2. Network - Get out of the office! Connect with former and current clients and colleagues. You never know who you will meet and where connections will lead. Plus, after you've taken the time to actually get to know the people in your virtual Rolodex, making sales call will be a breeze.
  3. Continuing Education - What skill do you need to hone in order to take your business to the next level? From leadership to financial analysis, now is the time to read a great book, take a class or seek out a local expert.
  4. Strategic Planning - Whether it is your management team, your board of directors or just a group of family and friends you trust, pull together a small group of people who have a vested interest in your success and host a brainstorming session to establish business goals for the year ahead.
  5. Declutter and Purge - Right after peak season, your office or work space may look like it was hit by a tornado. Now that you have time, take the opportunity to do a thorough and deep cleaning. Catch up on your filing, record keeping, and correspondence. Purge old files, broken office equipment and outdated promotional materials. Inventory your supplies and assess what needs to be purchased or replaced before things pick up again.

A change in season can affect your momentum. But, it is also the perfect time to refuel.
