At a young age Ian
Miller had been collecting and studying wilde moths for years. Now he
is able to turn this hobby into a successful business raising and
selling moths to collectors and creating beautiful moth mounted frames.
The start of his
business was assisted through Western Dairyland. Miller and Western
Dairyland worked together on the following:
- Attending Youth Entrepreneurship Program
- Registering the business with the county
- Obtaining a tax-identification number
- Getting a seller's permit
Miller mounts his
moths on wooden frames after perserving them. Instead of collecting
wild moths, Miller now raises moths in his backyard south of Eau
Claire. He started with cocoons of moths he found nearby,
including Luna and Cecropia moths. Miller also raises
caterpillars under 100 sleeves each summer at his home and on his
neighbor's land. In addition to this, Miller also sold moth eggs and
cocoons online to universities for a couple of years.
