Today’s economy is not necessarily the easiest place to
start a profitable business. However,
Mary Jo Hanson and Donna Kmetz, of Eau
Claire, Wisconsin,
accomplished just that. Being mothers
they understand the never ending need for clothing, shoes, and other necessities
that growing children require; not to mention, how expensive that can become. Five years ago, over cups of tea, they came
up with the idea for Here We Grow Again Children’s Consignment Sale. Their business, an event held twice each
year, invites families to sell their no longer needed, gently used children’s
items and buy other items that their children do need, all while keeping the
economic times in mind.
The first sale was held in Donna’s home where 20 consignors
and approximately 300 shoppers participated.
“We were so impressed with the response from the community,
more than 300 or so shoppers, we predicted bigger and better things were
possible,” recalls Mary Jo.
In September 2009, the most recent sale was held at a 12,000
square foot Expo Center
in Eau Claire. The sale hosted 350 consignors, over one
thousand shoppers, and held 35,000 children’s and maternity items. Having all these items under one roof and
providing the opportunity for families to reuse and recycle helps the
environment and keeps spending low for all those who participate. Charities benefit as well. Following each sale, a local nonprofit is
chosen to receive a donation.
“We continue to invest in our business,” says Donna, “with
both time and money and a goal of making our sale a rewarding experience for
all involved.”
The investing has paid off, and the success of their
business has allowed Mary Jo and Donna to share with others. Following their September 2009 sale, they
have assembled a complete business system called Start Your Own Sale. This allows anyone interested to start and
expand a similar seasonal consignment event.
This part time business can grow to provide a full time income. The system includes marketing strategies,
website content, an accounting and record keeping system, suggested layout,
rack design, ideas on keeping overhead low for maximization of profits, step by
step instructions, recommendations, and much more.
Assistance from Western Dairyland’s
Business Center Manager, Karman Briggs, really helped launch their business.
“Karman has been extremely helpful with the design and
marketing of our Start Your Own Sale system,” explains Mary Jo. “She has
helped with ideas, connections, and support.”
While there are franchises available, Mary Jo and Donna are
passionate about sharing their system without high franchise fees or
royalties.
“We feel strongly that one who wishes to start and expand a
consignment sale event does not need to spend that much money on franchise fees
and royalties,” states Mary Jo.
A much smaller one-time investment starts a successful sale
which contributes to families, the community, and the environment. All of the information can be found at www.StartYourOwnSale.com. Return
